Fashion Week Honduras ’10

December 1, 2010

Last month I attended the Fashion Week Honduras event for the second time. For this post, however, I’m going to focus on my personal experience rather than the fashion itself. Blogging kinda loses its fun when people start taking my opinions too seriously. Not even I take them seriously!

Anyway, I took an 8 hour bus ride to our capital (sore bum for sure) and was able to make it to the second day of shows. I missed the first day which was, err…at a mall. And YES, yours truly sat front row for two nights. It wasn’t exactly due to the fact that I blog or because of my extreme (and inexistent) popularity…I payed for my tickets! Hahaha…just like anybody else could’ve. ENJOY YOUR LIFE TAVI GEVINSON!

It was fun, but the poopy part about front row seats is that you reeeally have to watch how you sit. Serious lady mode: ON!

As usual, my camera wasn’t at its best behavior, but I’m posting these anyway, plus a few a friend let me borrow.

I noticed something I thought was kinda silly. The event was promoted as Fashion Week Honduras 2010, Fall Collection 2011! It seems that we are one season ahead of, well, anyone else?! Paris Fashion Week better catch up! Heehee.

My outfits were very last minute, and I don´t mean it in a “I’m so effortless and cool I just threw on the first thing I saw” way. I actually panicked because half my clothes were dirty and had zero time to make anything on my own.

On day 1 I ended up wearing a vintage blouse + long sheer skirt. The skirt is made of a lovely, textured, sheer fabric my cousin’s grandma gifted me.  I made a quick sketch for a lovely seamstress and she sewed it up for me in a day. Pictures of the skirt:

On day 2 I wore a printed, linen jumpsuit I designed. Wore it with a pair of tights I’ve had for a few years already, but have only used them a couple times. Vintage clutch + red smoochers.

Fashion Week Honduras is a very elitist event, so two nights of it are more than enough for the shy but also strongly opinionated-when-it-comes-to-politics person I am. Every now and then it feels good though, to step out of the microscopic bubble I live in and hang out with a few people who are just as enthusiastic about fashion as I am. Speaking of which, I finally got to meet Raul! He wrote an awesome and may I add particularly blunt post on FWH.

I was pretty upset because I missed Tirso Rubio’s show. He’s been doing great lately. Here’s a link to a site with pictures of his show in  the Dominican Republic event “Dominicana Moda”. How cool is that?!

It’s really no surprise how tough it can be for most aspiring designers in this country, or any third world country for that matter. These collections, until now, have never gone past sample sales and the veterans who’ve been doing it for the long run have dedicated themselves to dressing socialites: mostly night gowns and prom dresses to be precise. Is this all there is? Of course not! Our status quo should only inspire us to be truly and organically creative as well as perseverant. 🙂

For more pictures of the collections you can go here: Augeboga.

…and thankyou so much if you keep coming back! I know I’m not exactly the most efficient blogger. *Insert embarassed face here*P.S. I’m now decently active on my twitter.

Mini Makeover | Astrid

December 14, 2009

Before anything, I want to thank everyone for such kind emails and comments, they really do make my day! I have to say, I’m definitely opened up for opportunities but in the meantime I’ll make the most out of the resources that are available to me. On to the minimakeover…

Marito is basically my brother from another mother. Our mothers went to college together and I’ve known him since he was a baby.

He spends an unhealthy amount of hours browsing through LookBook, has a crush on Blair Waldorf and doesn’t complain, like most boys do, when I say I need a new pair of shoes. We get along just fine! Anyway, Marito loves to bring his schoolmates, along with half their closets, over to my place so that I can give them ideas on how to dress for upcoming school events.

Astrid was our latest…victim?

A jeans and t-shirt kinda gal, she was so embarrassed at first when I suggested we take the pictures outside. You would understand, there’s all this car honking and yelling going on. My favorite? “Adonde dejaste el avión, corazón?”, which translated would be, “Where’d you leave your plane, sweetheart?” Haha!

Dress: vintage.

I usually have a hard time convincing girls to wear some of the stuff I give them from my vintage collection…mostly items that very unfortunately don’t fit me, so I’ll usually just have to settle for their own wardrobe.

Besides the clothes, I ironed her hair, smudged some eyeliner and VOILA! I say she looks darling! Let us know your thoughts on the comments below! 🙂

Fruit Stand Inspiration

December 7, 2009

conversations-in-denim

I don’t think I’ve had a conversation regarding inspiration without mentioning the fruit vendor’s corner. This is where I’ve heard long lost love stories, life lessons, nasty gossip, stepped on horse dung, befriended strangers…

On this corner I’ve literally cried over bananas, have accepted candy for change, I’ve tripped over my heels, I’ve fallen in love with a street sweeper’s outfit (the prettiest crochet sweater/top and floral skirt ever)…and on THIS corner I’ve taken about a million outfit shots for my blog posts.

I know I complain about how far behind my hometown is when it comes to fashion, how there’s only one department store and how some consider me to be nuts, how there’s absolutely no college education options for fashion, and how people have asked to hire me to make uniforms for less than 100 lempiras ($5.00) because I sew and that’s what I might as well make a living of.

However, the streets of La Ceiba are my infinite source of inspiration AND education. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Flashback from DTWF part one:

I’m not saying I would ignore the opportunity to leave the country and obtain a formal education, but I will NEVER lead myself into believing that without them my dreams are only that: dreams. Will I allow my value to be determined by a systematic education rather than capacity and passion? I’ve done enough bickering about it, but have decided that nope. Not ever. Now, on to a less dramatic subject…a recent, quick DIY!

The strapless dress kept sliding down so I decided to make some straps for it with some leftover fabric from a dress + skirt.

Hope my rambling didn’t make you dizzy!
