Wrap Skirt

November 21, 2011

I’ve mentioned the lack of fabric choices in La Ceiba that leads to silly things like this, so once again I fell for a utility fabric with a funky print used for…TADADAAA…baby blankets!

Car print fabric

The texture is kinda cool, it promotes safety driving and has tinyLondon buses all over so t’was a keeper. Made a pattern for the “petal” skirt before cutting (I’m not a gifted cut-and-voilà type of seamstress, dangit), and I think it turned out okay.

I don’t really fancy T-shirts or anything jersey, but I guess they’re a must-have for lazy days. I did like the cut & color of this one and it was really cheap, but the Snoopy print on the front was a wee bit too much, even for me. I figured I’d go Rei Kawakubo on it and wear it inside out, serged seams shining in all their mass produced glory.

Shoes: Topshop (perhaps the only thing I own from Topshop, what the heck, it’s really not as cheap as everyone raves, at least not for a student on a budget like myself. By the wayyy, neither is Zara!)

Anway, it’s nice to have a new skirt to add to my kooky-prints collection. ♥

DIY Peek-a-Boo Shoulders

November 13, 2011

Over-sized tops are found in buttloads at thrift shops. Sometimes I like’m nice and roomy due to DIY potential. This top, for instance, had cute white polkadots all over but was faar too large at the shoulders. Rather than a cut-out, I added a slit that falls quite naturally.

Here’s how easy it was to do it:

Shoulder slit top DIY stepsHope my amateur drawings are decent enough to be understood! For best results, the top should be at least a size too big and the fabric should drape nicely. All can be sewn by hand, like I did, with a straight stitch as well as a slip stitch.

I made this skirt a while back and now recognize a few construction errors, but I still wear it all the time. On my trip to London, the gals from the L’oreal UK blog caught me wearing it on my way to a Yohji Yamamoto exhibit. Pic looks a bit stretched out but whoo cares! It was such an honor!

Vintage Corset

November 3, 2011

Corsets are to me what tank tops are to most. A basic must-have! ♥

Vintage pastel print corset

Found this pretty baby in a thrift store. It’s pastel colors and and pearly white texture reminded me of these abstract paintings, more like printed repros, that were found in every doctor’s clinic in Honduras back in the 80s/90s.

I’m not the best advocate for comfortable outfits, but wearing modern-day corsets like this one during lazy days is really not bad at all. Elastic back: check! Enough space for breathing: check!

It’s a shame you can’t see the corset details on these photos and that my face is shining like the sun. I’m still learning how to take flattering pictures. Bare with me, oui?

Next posts? DIY for next week and a cute car-print skirt I’m working on.
